My love for Slab Serifs started in the early 1960s in Kansas City when Rob Roy Kelly was at the Kansas City Art Institute, mentor and writing his book on American Wood Type. I learnt more about him simply well sufficient to be allowed access to his wonderful collection of wood type and wood type catalogs.
Later, in the 1970s I attempted to re-create an old Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black at New West Publication. And, once again for Roger, in the 1980s, I designed a Slab Serif logo design for Newsweek Magazine.
Finally, in 2003 I started creating the Sutro Household. Over the last years I have actually been dressing up the initial fonts and adding a bunch of brand-new ones.
Most just recently, I have added a Fill font to Sutro Open Initials. It's called Sutro Open Fill and together they serve as a tiny display household. Each font style can standing on it's own however they are carefully tailored to be utilized together: The Initial font over the Fill font.
