The idea for this entirely brand-new font style with overlapping characters came when Axel Stoltenberg, longtime IKARUS program developer at URW + +, visited a dining establishment. As it can be seen rather often, the day-to-day specials were used handwritten with chalk on a blackboard using a composing method never been available before for digital typefaces: each character is partially covered by its predecessor creating a three-dimensional impact. The implementation of this unusual notation for digital setting required a lot of programming and testing until all necessary character variants were produced and set appropriately constantly using the appropriate type. In order to achieve this, the OpenType Pro typeface ThreeDee consists of about 12,400 characters and all the required OpenType features (GSUB) for the automated setting in OTF smart application programs.

The a little playful standard design for ThreeDee was created by Anna Stoltenberg, the daughter of Axel, specially created for the ingenious representation and assistance of its special nature. The shadow produced with IKARUS even heightens the 3D effect. As is well-known, making usage of the ingrained OTF functions, i.e. the automated access to all the 12,400 character variants, a corresponding text/ design program (InDesign, Quark Xpress, present Open/ LibreOffice or MS Word and so on) is needed. ThreeDee is a heading typeface that will unveil all its charm and extraordinary quality at suitable, bigger sizes.
