Frutiger imposed stringent discipline across all elements of the series, from light to dark, additional condensed to extended, a concordance of style that was possible in the foundry type and photocomposition font styles. Any variation may be blended within a word with any other. It may be argued that the design of the most popular main series is restricted by strict conformity to little pre-owned extremes. If Helvetica offers us the greatest central styles at some sacrifice in uniformity across the series, Univers provides us a consistent series by disciplining the central designs.

Alteration of character widths needed by the Monotype caster separates Monotype Univers from the original; the Linotype photocomposition version, designed by Frutiger, has a more even color throughout the series, accomplished by relaxing the original rigid formula for stroke width.

IBM Selectric Univers, developed by Frutiger, is less effective, considering that it needed to be put on widths tuned for Times Roman.
