Variex was developed as a stroke style; each character is specified by center-lines of uniform weight, from which the 3 weights are likewise derived. Varying the weight of a stroke typeface alters the density around the center line and thus changes the alignment of some characters. Variex integrates these variations of positioning in its style, making adjustments to the center lines unneeded when altering the weight. As a result, the x-height varies amongst the 3 various weights.
