She could play for hours with her ribbon wand, mesmerized by the charming fast-moving patterns produced as its tail swirled and danced through the air.

This may also be why as a type designer, she fell in love with the ornamental, flowing letterforms of copperplate calligraphy and their smooth stroke modulation, a result which arises from using pressure-sensitive nibs, comparable to those utilized in conventional fountain pens.

Combining her memories of the three-dimensional spinning ribbons from her childhood and the distinct look of the copperplate letterforms she admired is what motivated Francesca to create Volina.
