Avenir was developed by Adrian Frutiger and released by Linotype-Hell AG in 1988. The style is based upon two earlier sans serif typefaces, Erbar and Futura. Avenir is unusual in that it has weights that are comparable, but each is designed for a various purpose.

For example, the Light and Reserve weights are similar, but Book is most appropriate for text blocks while the Light is much better for including a contrasting aspect (possibly a heading) to a much heavier weight. These weight selections also enable optimum results under diverse printing conditions.

Utilize the bold and extra strong weights of Avenir for focus with the light, book, and medium weights.
