Empirical was created by Russell Bean and published by Type Associates. Empirical includes 12 designs and household plan options. p > When I first approached this design back in 2003 I wrote myself a style brief that required a simple sans serif 'avec serifs' (with serifs).

Its focus needed to be on text usage however to be in the house in display sizes. A variety of weights with a regulated action from one weight to the next, uniform character sets, spacing and kerning throughout the variety. Attention to openness of counter spaces would be vital to operate in text sizes. Matching italics should hold true italics not simply slanted - with a cursive feel.

During extensive testing I decided to include a suite of ligatures to get rid of the hairline gaps that take place between piece serifs at display sizes. The user needs just to activate 'basic ligatures' which is on by default in most apps.

Six years in the making, I think it deserved the wait.
