The font style was motivated by the sci-fi motion picture posters, book covers and comic books of my childhood. The very first crude letterforms were conjured in an all night marathon session with no sketches and no planning. A simple character set, it consisted of upper case, lower case, numbers and basic punctuation. But, the job was little more than a fascinating exercise, and JLS Space faded into digital limbo. This regrettable typeface was ignored and lost for fifteen years. Mike Adkins, my co-conspirator, discovered and rescued the typeface file from the depths of a stopping working difficult drive. He sent out the file to me as a curiosity - a look back at our modest starts. I began puttering around with it on an impulse. Without really attempting, Data Gothic started to form. The fascinating letter kinds in Data and Space Gothic struck a cord, and I was motivated to complete the job almost twenty years after it was started.
JLS Space Gothic was influenced by the OCR and MICR font styles of the science fiction category. Today, its character will improve terms like Computer Diagnostic or Space Age Polymer. Posters, titles and screens will boldly blast off into the market place with these cybernetic letterforms. If Space Gothic is retro and appears limited in its genre, Data Gothic is modern with a broad spectrum of uses. This futuristic gothic does not sacrifice legibility for style. As a screen font style, JLS Data Gothic is excellent for technical requirements, on screen discussion, labeling, etc. In print, Data Gothic is a terrific font for text in handbooks, schematics, maps and diagrams.
